Previously Eva Wolbers was caring for, and occasionally rehoming dogs while working as a counselor with a Clinical Mental Health Masters Degree. However, Eva’s life changed completely when her home was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Eva decided to rebuild the interior of the home specifically for dogs. Eva has done all the work herself with the exception of electric and plumbing. She has invested over 5600 hours of her labor over the past two years, while living in a horse trailer next to the house. Eva plans to dedicate the rest of her life to finding the perfect home for every dog she takes in: whether with a new owner, or at DCS. She also wants to raise the community awareness of the value of dogs as companions. And let people who need support to keep their dogs know that there are community resources available.

Tiffany has been an animal lover forever. As a child she was raised on a farm with a lot of animals; horses, dogs, cats, bunnies, pigs, donkeys, ducks, peacocks, etc. And things have not changed that much. She now lives with her husband and 1 1 year old son along with 4 horses, 6 rabbits, a ferret, 6 cats and 5 dogs. And she loves them all. She and Eva were best friends growing up, and she is happy to help Eva achieve her dream by keeping the books accurately and up to date, a task which is so essential for a Not for Profit 501 (c) (3) Corporation.

When I first learned about the incredible work Eva was doing for animals, I knew I had to be part of it and I volunteered immediately. I was told my job would be “to give the dogs love”. She must have given the dogs the same instruction because I was soon covered with dogs and puppies loving me up! I was hooked on Day One. Though I was there to help the dogs, it was also true that I was there to help myself.
I retired 5 years ago and left NYC with the love of my life, my husband of 45 years, to live our best life in Sarasota. Sadly, he passed away 3 years later. When my grief lifted enough to think, I found myself struggling to find purpose and joy in life. My first step was to adopt a dog. My beautiful, graceful, clumsy, funny Greyhound rescue gives me happiness and love every day and night.
So, when I met Eva several months later, the thought of helping dogs sounded like the best thing in the world. But I didn’t expect to be so awed by what Eva has created for them here. She had completely refurbished her Hurricane demolished house and turned it into a dog-devoted space with a home-like environment. Through Eva’s knowledge and dedication, the extraordinary healing that happens here is almost magical.
Volunteering to help these dogs and to help grow Dog Centered Sanctuary so many more dogs can be happily rehomed has given me the purpose and joy that I never expected.
